About this blog:

This site was not developed with the intention of drawing a large number of visitors using trivial methods and shallowness. There is rejoicing among the angels when even one sinner repents and believes in Jesus Christ. (Luke 15:10) If, for as long as this site exists, just one sinner is led to repentance and belief in Christ with the aid of the material presented here, the purpose of this site has been served.

James White discussed several of the common attacks that come against reformed theology and showed, from Scripture, how they are not valid arguments.

Earnestly Contending for the Faith Against Legalism
      (James White)

      Friday, March 21, 2008

This final lecture in a series of three is about the present danger we face and the church as a whole has faced since it began. That danger is the threat of legalism. Even Paul kept his most stern admonitions not for the morally corrupted church at Corinth, but the churches at Galatia that was trying to finish up in the flesh what they had begun in the Spirit. Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for their legalism, too. Whether it comes from the smile of a megachurch "pastor" who tells you to "just do these few things and you'll be alright" or from another that seems to want your purpose in life to be driven by everything but faith alone in Christ and repentance of your sins, legalism is prevalent today. James White concludes this three part lecture series in this final one where he displays why we need to earnestly contend for the faith against legalism.

You Can Download the MP3 Here.

(I didn't share these in the order they were presented because I thought the issue of relativism was something that needed to be addressed first here. Originally the order was antinomianism, legalism, and relativism. Just a little explanation for why you hear James talking about the lecture tomorrow being on relativism during the first part of this lecture.)

Issues Etc. Cancelled Permanently?! (UPDATED 3/25/08)

      Tuesday, March 18, 2008

I was in James White's channel when someone came in and told us that Issues Etc. is cancelled permanently and Todd Wilken, the show's host, and Jeff Schwarz, the show's producer are fired. Sure enough, if you go to the Issues, Etc. archive, there is no page there anymore. (***Update: They reinstated it.***) This is all breaking news so I'm not sure about much of the details, but you can read more about this here, here, and here. This blog seems to be keeping up with it well. The person who told me about this said, "I would appreciate it, if you care about the show, to call this number: 1-888-843-5267."

Here are some links where you may be able to find out more:

      HT: 1, 2, 3

The Wittenburg Trail has set up a financial support fund for Wilken and Schwartz.

Feel free to comment with more information. Several already have.

      UPDATE (3/18/08):

Here's a friend who has commented on it who knows Jeff personally. Personal information regarding something Jeff's family is going through right now amidst this termination is posted there. I suggest for all to read this.

      Ingrid Schlueter
and James White sound off on the situation, too.

Also, someone has set up a blog for discussing this matter exclusively. It is called Bring Back Issues Etc.

      UPDATE (3/19/08):

I just got word that because of the calls and emails, the archives are going back online. You might want to get these while you still can. It's not certain how long they'll be available:

Chaz Lehmann has been keeping up with this closely, too, as he knows the parties involved personally. This story about Schwartz's wife and how these recent events will affect their family should be read.

      UPDATE (3/21/08):

      R. Scott Clark is reporting that a reliable source shared with him that Todd and Jeff were called to the LCMS headquarters and offered severance in return for keeping their silence about the issue. There's still no explanation from the LCMS. I wrote a letter to David Strand expressing my concerns including my disdain for there being no explanation of the move, and I basically got what looked to be a mass email reply with my name added to the top:

      Dear Mr. Chaplin:

Thank you for your e-mail. We are sorry for your disappointment over the change in KFUO-AM programming. However, we hope you will enjoy our future programs.

      Sincerely in Christ,

      David L. Strand

If This Doesn't Convince You That Limited Atonement is True...

      Monday, March 17, 2008

If these two videos do not convince you that the Calvinistic doctrine of limited atonement (or definite atonement) is true and Biblical, I'm not sure what will.

Philip at Reformed Voices has been posting clips from Jim McClarty for a while now. If you're not familiar with either of their ministries already, I highly advise looking into them.

      Watch Youtube Videos in Hi-Def

Someone figured out how to watch any video posted on Youtube in "HD". (Not true HD, of course, but Hi-Res with much better audio.) All you have to do is put this code at the end of the url:

      &fmt=18

You need a fast connection to watch them like this which is why they don't offer it as standard. I didn't figure this out; someone else did, but I thought I would pass it on for those who are interested.

Does John 3:16 Refute God's Unconditional Election?

      Sunday, March 16, 2008

Many people that disagree with the fact that God has unconditionally elected people unto salvation often appeal to John 3:16 as their "proof text" that this doctrine must be wrong. Is this true, though? Watch these three videos to find out...

Earnestly Contending for the Faith Against Antinomianism
      (James White)

Antinomianism (from the Greek αντι, "against" + νομος, "law"), or lawlessness (in the Greek Bible: ανομια, which is "unlawful"), in theology, is the idea that members of a particular religious group are under no obligation to obey the laws of ethics or morality as presented by religious authorities. (The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition, 2000.) In other words, antinomianism can categorize those people who live lacivious lives, but still say "I'm under grace, not under the law." They believe that since they are under grace, they have no need to keep the moral law to any degree, and they can sin as much as they like. A popular term that has been used to "excuse" this type of behavior is "the Carnal-Christian". James White, in this second of three lectures, explains why the Carnal-Christian is a myth and why we need to earnestly contend for the faith against this enemy of antinomianism.

Earnestly Contending for the Faith Against Relativism
      (James White)

      Thursday, March 13, 2008

About two years ago, James White gave three separate sermons about about three of the biggest problems facing the Church: relativism, legalism, and antinomianism. This first one is on relativism. He points out the dangers in this philosophy that permeates so much of professing evangelicalism and explains why post-modern thought is, in it's essence, anti-christian. Lord willing, I'll post the other two in the near future.

Streamlining My Library on eBay... Round 2.

      Monday, March 10, 2008

I'm streamlining my library on eBay again, this time more of necessity. I hope to be in a law school by the fall, and I'm getting funds together now to plan accordingly. This round I'm selling a lot of old college books that I never sold back along with Charles Spurgeon's 3 vol set of sermons on Miracles and Parables, a 14 book lot of Francis Schaeffer books, the 2 volume set of Jonathan Edwards' previously unpublished sermons, and a 4 book set of A.W. Pink's Gleanings series.

You can see what I'm selling here. I should be adding to it in the next few days. Matthew Henry's commentary will be there in the next few days, Lord willing. Perhaps G. Campbell Morgan's 10 volume Westminster Pulpit series will be there eventually, as well.

      "Why?"

      Friday, March 7, 2008

Through the internet, I get a chance to meet all kinds of people, but the ones I seem to come across very frequently in the things I do are professing Christians. These are the type of people who would say, "Yes, I'm a Christian because Joel Osteen told me how to have my best life now!", "Yes, I'm a Christian even though I don't believe in a virgin birth, miracles, or a literal resurrection!", or "Yes, I'm a believer because I think the foul-mouthed profanity and irreverent behavior of Mark Driscoll is relevant to me because I like to do that stuff, too!" When dealing with these people more and more, though, the easier I've been able to spot when an argument is going to come from someone who professes to believe in Christ, but their actions don't line up. So instead of going further, from the outset I've simply been asking them, "Do you believe in Jesus Christ?" Of course they say, "Yes." I then follow it up with this:

      "Why?"

In my dealings so far, I've received all kinds of answers and even people dodging the question, but not once has someone said,

"I believe in Christ because of God's mercy and grace alone. Otherwise, I'd still be hating Christ in my unbelief and be already condemned forever." (John 3:18)

It's something to think about. Why do you believe in Christ?

Martin Luther an Ex-Heretic Now? Well, According to Rome...

The "infallible" pope declared recently that Martin Luther did not intend to split Christianity but only to purge the Church of corrupt practices. In other words, the same Martin Luther who was proclaimed to a heretic by the church of Rome by the "infallible" authority of "Christ's Vicar upon earth" at one time is now going to be declared by the church of Rome by the "infallible" authority of "Christ's Vicar upon earth" that he wasn't so bad after all in another time. Do you see the consistency here? Neither do I. Neither does James White:

R.C. Sproul Interviewed Ben Stein on the New Movie Expelled

      Thursday, March 6, 2008

The new movie dealing with the suppression of Creationism's right of free speech by the world of academia called Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed is coming out soon. This is a great 27 minute interview between R.C. Sproul and Ben Stein, the movie's host. Brian at RecovertheGospel posted this the other day, but I thought it was worthy to post here, as well, for those who weren't aware of it.

      Jesus Christ's Church Shrinkage Movement
      (James White)

      Tuesday, March 4, 2008

No man can come to me, except the Father who has sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that has heard, and has learned of the Father, comes unto me. Not that any man has seen the Father, except he who is of God, he has seen the Father. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believes on me has everlasting life. I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
      (Joh 6:44-51)

One of the things that has struck me is not only what our Lord said here, but also who he said this to. He was talking to people who had followed him for the most part not because they saw a miracles but because they got their felt needs met. (John 6:26) If you ask a "seeker" sensitive pastor these days, they would say that Jesus Christ did a horrible job in this aspect of his ministry. "You had them, Jesus! All you had to do was seal the deal, and you would have had them be regular attendees to your ministry!" Jesus Christ never held back the truth from anyone, though; even when it was certain that the number of those who followed Him would decrease. "'Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.' From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him." (John 6:65-66) Saying that this passage kind of defeats the "Christ follower" mentality that is prevalent in the "seeker" churches and the "emergent" movement is an understatement.

Listen to James White discuss this aspect of our Lord's uncompromising ministry in what he calls "The Church Shrinkage Movement."

The Right Way to Respond to Rob Bell and Members of His Fan Club

      Sunday, March 2, 2008

Here are two videos. The first is a response to the Bullwhip Guy satire that I posted a few months ago. (If you haven't seen it and are familiar with Rob Bell's Bullhorn Guy video, do yourself a favor and look at it. The point is well made.) In it, the person gives several responses as to why he believes Rob Bell to be a legitimate believer in Jesus Christ and why we "shouldn't judge this brother."

The person who helped make the Bullwhip Guy video saw this first response and decided to address the specific points brought up, but he did something else that is really lacking among professing believers: he appealed to Scripture...

By appealing to Scripture without an uncompromising view of it is the right way to deal with these emergent and "seeker" sensitive folks who would rather us appeal to ourselves and/or themselves as the final authority. I believe these two videos contrast both of these views.
