Issues Etc. Cancelled Permanently?! (UPDATED 3/25/08)

I was in James White's channel when someone came in and told us that Issues Etc. is cancelled permanently and Todd Wilken, the show's host, and Jeff Schwarz, the show's producer are fired. Sure enough, if you go to the Issues, Etc. archive, there is no page there anymore. (***Update: They reinstated it.***) This is all breaking news so I'm not sure about much of the details, but you can read more about this here, here, and here. This blog seems to be keeping up with it well. The person who told me about this said, "I would appreciate it, if you care about the show, to call this number: 1-888-843-5267."

Here are some links where you may be able to find out more:

HT: 1, 2, 3

The Wittenburg Trail has set up a financial support fund for Wilken and Schwartz.

Feel free to comment with more information. Several already have.

UPDATE (3/18/08):

Here's a friend who has commented on it who knows Jeff personally. Personal information regarding something Jeff's family is going through right now amidst this termination is posted there. I suggest for all to read this.

Ingrid Schlueter
and James White sound off on the situation, too.

Also, someone has set up a blog for discussing this matter exclusively. It is called Bring Back Issues Etc.

UPDATE (3/19/08):

I just got word that because of the calls and emails, the archives are going back online. You might want to get these while you still can. It's not certain how long they'll be available:

Chaz Lehmann has been keeping up with this closely, too, as he knows the parties involved personally. This story about Schwartz's wife and how these recent events will affect their family should be read.

UPDATE (3/21/08):

R. Scott Clark is reporting that a reliable source shared with him that Todd and Jeff were called to the LCMS headquarters and offered severance in return for keeping their silence about the issue. There's still no explanation from the LCMS. I wrote a letter to David Strand expressing my concerns including my disdain for there being no explanation of the move, and I basically got what looked to be a mass email reply with my name added to the top:

Dear Mr. Chaplin:

Thank you for your e-mail. We are sorry for your disappointment over the change in KFUO-AM programming. However, we hope you will enjoy our future programs.

Sincerely in Christ,

David L. Strand

Sheesh.

I don’t know if this will come in handy, but I’ve created a blog that can serve as a clearinghouse for information about the cancellation, and a place for fans of the show to discuss what should happen next. Even if the show never returns to KFUO, I believe something resembling Issues Etc. will sprout again — probably online — but only if Lutherans work together to make it happen.

Meanwhile, an online petition has been started up about Issues, Etc. being ended. I don't know how much good it will do, but it should be able to do some. it certainly can't hurt to put your name down. Here's the link:
http://www.petitiononline.com/Issues/petition.html

For anyone who comes across this and has Facebook, the most discussion it seems is going on at the "Bring back Issues ETC!!!" Facebook group.

Finally, financial help for the Schwarz and Wilken families can be sent to the following address. Just put in the memo line that it’s for the “Schwartz/Wilken Fund”. The Schwarzes especially need the help and Rev. Jack Schwarz's wife Beth has been recently diagnosed with small fiber neuropathy and they need to go to Mayo Clinic to try figuring out what can be done.

"Schwartz/Wilken Fund"

P.O. Box 247
Hamel, IL 62046

All help and all prayers are appreciated.

I will be continuing to post information and resources relating to the cancellation of Issues, Etc. and firing of Rev. Wilken and Mr. Schwarz. So, if you could please help me draw people to the resource of my blog, I would really appreciate it.

Lane,

This is the same response I received. Following is my email to David Strand, and his response.

Dear Mr. Riemann:

Thank you for your e-mail. We are sorry for your disappointment over
the change in KFUO-AM programming. However, we hope you will enjoy our
future programs.

Subject: Issues Etc.

Mr. Strand,

I was deeply saddened by the news of the cancellation of Issues Etc. As a Calvinist, KFUO radio has been a favorite of mine for years, given the fact that poor theology is taught on most Christian radio stations. Issues Etc. in particular is my favorite show on KFUO. I am indebted to my Lutheran brothers for this service to the Reformed community.

Issues was a very unique show, and I can't think of anything that can
take it's place. I will now have a void in the late afternoon to fill,
if I can find anything worthwhile.

I believe those responsible owe the committed, faithful listeners an
explanation for this cancellation. Thousands have been faithful for
many, many years in listening and supporting not only Issues Etc., but KFUO as well.

I'm sorry, but I can't help feeling violated and abandoned by this
sudden, unannounced move. This may affect my future support of KFUO
Radio and the LCMS.

P.S. And why was the Issues Etc. program archive deleted? This seems a lot like adding insult to injury. Allowing access to this is the least that could be done for the faithful fans of the show. Shame on those responsible for this action!

Sincerely, Paul Riemann

That confirms my suspicions, Paul. Sheesh. This isn't looking good at all for the LCMS especially if the report from R. Scott Clark about Jeff and Todd being offered severance for silence holds.

"The promotion of unity at the expense of truth is satanic; it is demonic; it is not true unity. It is not the unity of the Holy Spirit for He is the Spirit of Truth. The Scriptural command which we have in Ephesians to promote the unity of the Spirit and the bond of peace is given to those who have a common foundation of truth. Truth by its very nature divides.Where you have appeal to unity at the expense of truth all you can produce is uniformity."

Do you imagine that the Gospel is magnified or God glorified by going to worldlings and telling them that they “may be saved at this moment by simply accepting Christ as their personal Savior” while they are wedded to their idols and their hearts are still in love with sin? If I do so, I tell them a lie, pervert the Gospel, insult Christ, and turn the grace of God into lasciviousness.

- A.W. Pink

There are many today who regard truth and error as matters of small consequence; if a man lives rightly, they say, it matters not much what his beliefs and opinions are. Such statements do not surprise us. Night and day are all one to a blind man. Truth and error are all one to an ignorant man.

- Martyn Lloyd Jones

As the apostle says to Timothy, so also he says to everyone, 'Give yourself to reading.' He who will not use the thoughts of other men's brains (inspired by the Holy Spirit) proves that he has no brains of his own. You need to read. Renounce as much as you will all light literature, but study as much as possible sound theological works, especially the Puritanic writers and expositions of the Bible. The best way for you to spend your leisure is to be either reading or praying.

We should aim
to speak as in the sight of God. We are to ask ourselves not, 'what did the people think of me?', but, 'what was I in the sight of God?'

Away, then, with those prophets who say to Christ's people, "Peace, peace," where in there is no peace. Hail, hail to all those prophets who say to Christ's people, "The cross, the cross," where there is no cross. Christians should be exhorted to be zealous to follow Christ, their Head, through penalties, deaths, and hells; And let them thus be more confident of entering heaven through many tribulations rather than through a false assurance of peace.

In these days of health care for all, education for all, rights for all, and opportunity for all, it seems almost inevitable that the Gospel of Jesus Christ would be obscured by the popular religious teaching of salvation for all. I'm always amazed by the people who, despite God's clear and emphatic commands through the Apostle Paul, say things like, "Ah, we need to forget about the differences in our doctrines, and we just need to love one another." as though those two are consistent goals. Surely they haven't come to realize that the only way we can love right is to live right, and the only way we can live right is to believe right.

The student of the New Testament should be primarily an historian. The centre and core of all the Bible is history. Everything else that the Bible contains is fitted into an historical framework and leads up to an historical climax. The Bible is primarily a record of events.

One of these days some simple soul will pick up the Book of God, read it, and believe it. Then the rest of us will be embarrassed.

I remember when I used to ask Jesus into my heart as a child over and over again. Each time I intended to make absolutely sure that I was saved. Why do we do that? Why is it in some churches that we see the same people walking down the aisle week after week? Perhaps it is because we are looking to something we can do, or have done, to secure the kind of assurance we need. But we can't trust our feelings or our abilities of either will or effort, so we're left with having to trust in the ability of God, 'who is able to keep you from falling' (Jude 24).

We must not forget that historic Christianity stands on a basis of antithesis. Without it historic Christianity is meaningless.

I find it so funny that so many people ask and can't answer the question as to why God has done everything He's ever done. They say it's a mystery. I say it's not. I say they ought to read Ephesians. Do you want to know why God has done everything He's ever done? Do you want to know why there was a garden, why there was a fall, why there was a Christ, why there was a Cross, why there was a resurrection, and why there's you? Do you really want to know? Do you have enough time... or is your Christianity looking at the clock?
